Driving test information

In 2008, Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly announced the biggest shake-up of UK driving tests for 50 years. Under her proposals, a star-rating system for instructors was introduced to help learners make an informed choice based on pass rates, while the test has been revamped to place less emphasis on manoeuvres and more focus on skills and understanding of different situations on the road.

So now the system has been revamped, what can learners expect on test day and how can they prepare?

How to prepare for your test

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has introduced a `driver`s record`, which will either be given to you with your provisional driving licence, or can be picked up from your instructor or test centre. It has a list of 24 key skills covered in the practical test with five different levels for each. The fifth level indicates that you can carry out the skill consistently and without prompting. Once you have achieved level five for each of the 24 skills you will be ready to take your practical driving test.

What do you need for your driving test?

You must take a number of items with you on test day - failure to do so may result in your test being cancelled and the loss of your fee.

  • An insured and licensed vehicle displaying L-plates (most test centres will supply a vehicle or you may use your instructor`s
car - but always check this is the case).

  • Your appointment letter.

  • Theory test certificate.

  • Both parts of your photo-card licence (if you have an old style licence you will need the signed driver licence and a valid passport).

What happens on test day?

Firstly you will take an eyesight check, which involves reading a number plate from a certain distance. You will then be asked two vehicle safety check questions before entering the vehicle with your examiner where the practical test will begin.

The examiner gives you a series of directions which you must follow. You`ll follow a test route designed to be as uniform as possible to test you in a range of conditions. It`s important to drive as you have been taught by your instructor, sticking to the rules of the road. You will also be asked to perform some set exercises which you should have practised, such as an emergency stop or reversing around a corner.

The examiner is looking for you to drive safely at all times. You are allowed to make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test - however if you make 16 or more you will fail. You will also fail if you commit one serious or dangerous fault. If you make a mistake stay calm - it may only be a minor fault.

Remember all examiners must carry out tests to the same standard - so as long as you drive to that standard you will be just fine.

What happens when the test is over?

If you fail, don`t worry - ask the examiner for feedback and you can have another go after 10 working days.

Should you pass and have a photo-card licence issued after March 1 2004, the examiner will offer you the chance to have your full driving licence issued automatically. If so he will scan your details and give you a pass certificate - the DVLA will send you a full driving licence within four weeks. Alternatively, you can follow the instructions on the back of the pass certificate.

Remember when you pass to arrange for
car insurance before driving as it is a legal requirement in the UK
